About The Visits

Your First Consultation

If you are considering making an appointment, please contact my office at 201-247-2339. I will then contact you at your convenience. I will ask you questions about the reason for your seeking treatment. This may include scheduling an in-office appointment. Daytime and evening hours are available.

Your First Visit

During our first appointment, I will listen attentively to you, and ask questions to help me to clarify and understand your feelings, concerns, and experiences. In order to help identify the best treatment for you, I may ask you about any possible sources of stress, previous mental health treatments, medical conditions, family history, and other relevant information. You will have every opportunity to ask any question that comes to mind.

By the end of the session, I will explain to you my impression of the nature of your condition, and will review all treatment options with you. This may include psychotherapy (talk therapy), psychopharmacology (medication therapy), or a combination of the two. We will discuss all of these options, and will create a treatment plan together that suits your preferences and provides the maximal benefit. For more information, see our services.

Subsequent Visits

If we decide together on psychotherapy, this is often best accomplished in visits scheduled every one or two weeks. If we decide that only psychopharmacology will be used, these visits are generally about once per month or less, as soon as you begin feeling better and the optimal dosage of medication has been established.

The length of treatment can vary considerably depending upon the nature of your condition; generally, emotional conditions that are more recent and short-lived can be treated in less than one year, while more chronic conditions require longer periods of treatment. The frequency and length of treatment will be a decision that we will make together, and we may revise the type, duration, and frequency of treatment if necessary.
