There are several different types of anxiety. Below we describe five types. Dr. Brown is highly experienced in the treatment of these and other forms of anxiety.

Generalized anxiety disorder or GAD is characterized by chronic excessive worrying and by certain physical symptoms. These symptoms can occur even when the person is not experiencing a stressful life event.

Panic disorder is characterized by acute and overwhelming anxiety that occurs in very intense and specific episodes which last for relatively short periods of time. People with this disorder often experience sudden onset of shortness of breath, heart palpitations, dizziness, a desire to flee, fear of losing control, and other symptoms.

Obsessive compulsive disorder or OCD  is a type of anxiety characterized by recurrent unwanted thoughts and compulsive rituals, such as excessive hand washing, counting, or checking, which are intended to subdue the anxiety.

Social anxiety disorder has similar symptoms to generalized anxiety and panic disorder but only occurs in social situations.

Post traumatic stress disorder or PTSD arises after a severe, traumatic life event and persists long after the event; symptoms include flashbacks, nightmares, numbness or detachment, and feeling easily startled.
